Galen Demus, Board Member

Galen Demus, nephew of Billy Strayhorn, joined the Board ofDirectors for Billy Strayhorn Songs Inc. in 2005. Galen has worked in the area of jazz education for the organization, promoting the name and legacy of Billy Strayhorn through several initiatives related to jazz education.

Galen started the Billy Strayhorn Jazz Education Scholarship, established in 2008 to recognize individuals and institutions that display a strong passion for playing, promoting and teaching the continuing legacy of jazz music. Institutions that have benefited from the Strayhorn Scholarship include the Jamey Aebersold summer jazz camp and the Temple University Jazz studies program, under the direction of Terell Stafford. Galen has also worked to re-establish Billy Strayhorn Songs as a part of the Jazz Education Network. Galen attended the first two JEN conferences, then worked to have Billy Strayhorn Songs take part in the 2012 conference as an exhibitor. Galen continues to work with other Strayhorn Songs family/board members to move forward with implementing plans for the Billy Strayhorn 2015 centennial celebration. He also continues to work with the board to increase jazz education activities and historical materials available on Strayhorn through the recent formation of the Billy Strayhorn Foundation.

Galen is a 1983 graduate of the University of Louisville, graduating from the U of L business school, majoring in marketing. Galen's 25 year business career includes sales and marketing experience with The Louisville Courier Journal newspaper, Brown and Williamson Tobacco, La-Z-Boy furniture galleries and Republic Services. Mr. Demus also previously has been the owner/operator of a Great Clips for Hair franchise. Currently, Galen Demus is in his 5th year working for the non-profit organization Big Brothers Big Sisters.
