On Thursday October 15th, the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame inducted its 2026 class of inductees, honoring six influential artists and groups whose work has helped shape American music across genres. Included among those six inductees, was arranger, composer and pianist Billy Strayhorn. The 2026 induction ceremony took place at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville, North Carolina. The event, which was open to the public, also included numerous celebrities from the music and entertainment community who enjoyed the induction festivities.

2026 inductee Billy Strayhorn was an influential jazz composer and arranger best known for his long-term collaboration with Duke Ellington. His compositions include “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Lush Life,” both established as jazz standards. It was noted that some of Strayhorn’s work is recognized in the Grammy Hall of Fame and by the Library of Congress for its historical and cultural significance. Strayhorn spent significant time with his grandparents and extended family in Hillsborough. His arrangements were central to the development of the Duke Ellington Orchestra over nearly three decades. Strayhorn family members Leah Morris and Dante Strayhorn were in attendance to enjoy the festivities. Ms. Morris accepted the induction award on behalf of the Strayhorn family and estate.

The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame celebrates artists, songwriters, producers and other music industry figures with ties to the state, preserving their contributions for future generations. Recognition is about more than individual accomplishments.
