Rest in Peace to Jazz Great: Guitarist Russell Malone

Billy Strayhorn Song Inc. and the Billy Strayhorn Foundation mourn the sudden passing on August 23rd, 2024 of world renowned jazz guitarist Russell Malone. Born November 8th, 1963 in Albany, Georgia, Russell began playing at the age of 4. B.B. King, the Dixie Hummingbirds and George Benson were early influences. He was mostly self taught.

Starting in 1988, he spent 2 years with Jimmy Smith, then 3 years with Harry Connick Jr. In 1995, he became the guitarist for the Diana Krall Trio. He recorded and toured with pianist Benny Green in the late 1990’s until 2007. Some other notable jazz greats he played and recorded with were Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves, Kenny Barron, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Jack McDuff, Mulgrew Miller, and Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson among many others. He recorded his first solo album in 1992, and led his own outstanding trio and quartet. Russell elegantly performed a wonderful set at the Library of Congress in June of 2023 at an event to honor Billy Strayhorn.
