The 2025 Strayhorn Scholarship Concert at the Berklee College of Music a Huge Success!
On February 24th, the prestigious Berklee College of Music held the 2nd annual Strayhorn Scholarship event as part of their 2024 Keys Fest. Keys Fest is the Berklee Piano Department’s annual festival of everything that can be done with a musical keyboard. 2025 included the Billy Strayhorn Scholarship winner for piano and composition, freshman Lucas LaBeau. Lucas opened his set with a beautiful version of ‘A Flower is Lovesome Thing’, followed by 3 of his own unique compositions. He ended with 2 Billy Strayhorn classics, a glowing version of ‘Lush Life’, and a crowd pleasing rousing version of ‘Take The “A” Train’. Lucas was masterfully accompanied by band mates from Berklee.
Special thanks to the Professor of Piano Doug Johnson for his help in hosting and coordinating the 2025 Strayhorn Concert. Kudos also to Assistant Professor of Piano Jason Yeager for collaborating with the Billy Strayhorn Foundation to provide this scholarship opportunity. A big Thank You also to the Berklee College of Music Piano Department for highlighting Billy Strayhorn at such a first class event.
